While I do not often do reviews, I felt compelled as this was by far one of my BEST moving … More experiences. From my first call and speaking with Mark, his professionalism, clarity and follow up had me knowing that I was likely going with Top Notch out of the gate. The team of Chris and Ernesto were OUTSTANDING. Smart, also professional, care and efficiency made my move as smooth as it could be. So glad I went with this team and I would not hesitate to use them again and certainly recommend them. No matter how large or small your move is, look no further!

Local Move, within state, county, or city

    What categorizes a local move?

    • Any move within the state, county, or city limits. Generally speaking, something that can be picked up and delivered the same day or the day after.

Simply put, if you aren’t crossing state lines your move is local. Some states are large, and it takes a day or so to move belongings from one end to another, but that is still an intrastate move. Now, there are two types of local moves, local within a 50-mile radius from your origination and within the state.

Local move within a 50-mile radius of your origin:

Moves like that are easier to get done and are more common, as people tend to move nearby more often than out of state or out of the county. These moves can be done by hiring a moving company, renting a truck, or renting a pod. Depending on the circumstances and requirements of each move. Less planning, easier to get things moving without professional packing, and less time-consuming than out-of-state moves or local moves within the state.

    Local Move within the State:

Let’s take Florida as an example, as we are a Florida-based moving company. Any move within the state is still considered a local move for a moving company. Even if you are moving from Key West to Tampa. Usually, the process is the same, it does however involve a little bit more preparation and planning. Also, the cost of moving is higher, even if you will do it yourself due to the distance between the cities. We recommend hiring a mover or renting a pod for intrastate moves as it usually involves a long drive time and renting a truck might not be as beneficial and cost effective.

    Cost of Moving Locally

Let’s break down the cost of moving locally. We decided to make it easier for you and organized everything into useful breakdown toggle segments. Choose your way of moving, and find out what charges and costs you can expect. But always do your own research and reach out to movers to get an accurate quote before proceeding.

Local movers usually charge an hourly rate when moving locally. Prices vary greatly depending on the time of the year, availability, the beginning or the end of the month, and services included in the hourly rate.

Ideally, you should look for a local mover who includes most of the fees within the hourly rate, fees such as gas, miles, tolls, taxes, equipment to move you, moving pads, tools, and tape. That’s standard for many reputable local movers.

Rates can range from mover to mover, but generally speaking, are as follows:

    • 2 Men ($100/hr to $160/hr)
    • 3 Men ($140/hr to $200/hr)
    • 4 Men ($180/hr to $240/hr)
    • 5 Men ($220/hr to $280/hr)
    • 6 Men ($260/hr to $320/hr)

Most likely you will see 2 – 4 men range on hourly local moving jobs. Anything over is generally quoted in person after an in-home estimate and then billed as a flat rate for an entire job, mostly due to the size of the move (larger homes).

A lot of times moving companies will also bill you additionally for the packing of fragile items, TVs, glass tops, glass inserts, marble tops, cabinets with glass and others will result in an additional charge. Movers will use packing materials to secure fragile items, bubble wrap, and boxes.

The average cost of hiring a mover for your local move will range anywhere from $500 to $1400 and above for larger households.

You can find more information and details in our new article about the cost of moving locally.

Renting a truck is always an option if you are able to move yourself or would like to save money on hiring a mover. There are plenty of services available to rent trucks of any size that can be driven without a CDL license, popular ones are:

    • Penske
    • Budget
    • Enterprise
    • U-haul

Each company differs on charges, sizes of trucks, and usability. Notably, two of the more popular ones are Penske and U-haul, Budget usually comes as the 3rd option and Enterprise is lesser known but still a great option.

From the side of the professional moving company, we prefer Enterprise and Penske trucks due to their reliability, superior maintenance, and awesome customer support. However, most people will consider U-haul to be the primary choice for local moves. Due to their cost, ease of loading, and lot of options when it comes to the size of trucks, trailers, etc.

When it comes to cost, for local moves U-haul most of the time will be a clear winner, especially if we are talking about the moves that don’t require a lot of mileage use.

The cost of renting a truck can differ from around $100 to $200 a day all included. For more details on cost and how much the rental truck can cost you can read our new article about renting a moving truck for your move.

A 3rd option, not the most common one, but sometimes works best in certain situations when temporary storage or mobility is required. There are a few big players in the industry when it comes to renting containers, PODS, and Pack Rat are the ones that are used the most. PODS originated in Florida (Tampa), and Pack Rat is offered and supported by Lowe’s. Why should you consider renting a pod for your local move?

    • You need short-term storage for your items.
    • Container can be placed directly on your property during renovations.
    • You would like to have full control and flexibility on when to load your items, unload, and give up the container.
    • Not trusting a mover, or not wanting to drive a moving truck without prior experience.

Also, containers aren’t best for long-term storage options, as they are not great when stored outside. Heat and humidity will destroy your items over time.

Renting a container can be as expensive as hiring a mover, you definitely should compare costs and see if there are more pros than cons.

The average cost of renting a container for your local move is somewhere in the range of $800 to $2000 depending on the size of the container, and the actual amount of containers required to move.

In all the cases pointed out above, we suggest making sure that you get your information in writing before committing to any type of help or service. Avoiding Craigslist or simple ads with unlicensed or uninsured service providers will save you a ton of money, nerves, and time.

Moving nearby generally doesn’t take as much time as moving out of state and is always easier to plan, prepare, and get done. However, working with a professional and licensed mover or having a plan of action will always be a great idea. At the end of the day, you are moving into your new home, and you need to remember it as a positive experience, rather than a hurdle that needs to be overcome.

What's the average cost of moving locally?

From our experience, local moves can range anywhere from around $500 to $1400 on average depending on the size of the household.

    Planning a Local Move

Without a doubt, a tedious task. Easier than planning an out-of-state move, but still requires preparation and time. Moving alone? With family? Pets? Every aspect needs to be accounted for. This is why it is best to begin planning for your local move ahead of time. We advise preparing for your move a month or so in advance.

Benefits of planning out your local move:

    • Less stress during the move itself. Preparation is key to ensure that your local move will go according to plan and that you know exactly what to expect out of the process.
    • Budgeting. With proper research done and multiple estimates gathered beforehand, you know exactly how much money you need to put aside and have available at the end of the day.
    • You will have time to research your options, movers, rentals, labor help, or specialized moving services. Ensuring that you will have the best help or know exactly what to do when moving.

Downsides of moving without prior planning or preparation:

    • Last-minute moves can be expensive. Moving companies, truck rentals, and other services tend to charge more on the same-day local moves or moves that are done within a 3-day window from the day of the request, classifying them as sort of an emergency service that is required by the client. In some cases, movers with open time slots can offer the same rate as for any other day, but it is less common during peak moving times in Spring, Summer, or Fall.
    • You might be underprepared, not packed, and not organized enough to move everything in one day. Delays with the move can cause a lot of unnecessary issues, delays with closing, and extension requests with the building, you might end up paying even more money out of pocket simply due to the late move-out. Moving your items without sorting them out or properly packing them may result in unnecessary damages that could’ve been easily avoided.
    • Preparation is key, in every aspect of our everyday life. We are happy to help you to prepare for your local move and offer our local moving services. Contact us today or follow the button for more information on how to be ready to move locally.
